Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

🤝 How people are helping each other through the LA fires

A 14-year-old creating a free makeshift “mall” for teenage evacuees. Volunteers staffing animal shelters and fostering pets. Restaurants providing free food for firefighters and bookstores stocking emergency supplies. While devastating, the LA fires have shone a light on the city’s community networks, and the ways people are stepping up to help each other face climate disaster.

🐜 The hidden power of ants in agriculture

Up to 40% of global crops are lost to pests, a huge blow that’s worsened by climate change, which puts plants at higher risk of infection and creates the perfect conditions for new strains to emerge. One alternative to chemical pesticides comes from an unlikely source: ants. As they march along, ants spread tiny drops of antibiotic microorganisms from their feet, so we can use them to protect orchards around the world. While surprising, this practice isn’t new – ants were used as a pesticide for more than a millennia in China.

Road emissions on track to peak in 2025

According to a recent study, global road emissions will peak this year, a quarter of a century earlier than previously predicted. The research used current environmental rules to forecast the future, with the faster fall in emissions due to new regulations that demand higher numbers of zero-emissions vehicles in manufacturers’ sales, as well as the plummeting price of these vehicles.
