Today's good climate and environment news
Happy Friday! Since it’s almost the weekend, I won’t take up too much of your time. Here’s five bites of good climate news – enjoy.
⚖️ Lawyering up for the climate
Fighting climate change with the law doesn’t have to mean taking Shell executives to court. From patenting approvals for climate technologies to advising nonprofits, many lawyers are donating their time and skills pro bono to the people and organisations that are pushing forward climate solutions around the world.
🏠 Building greener homes
Rather than building new homes brick by brick where they stand, modular construction – stacking together pre-built units – could make homes both more affordable and more energy efficient. Because much of the work can be performed off-site, it can be done more precisely, creating tighter seals around doors and windows to keep the heat in.
🚂 A win for the German rail pass
An affordable subscription-based train ticket has gone a long way towards encouraging Germans to ditch their cars. As a result, it’s spurred savings of 4.2–6.5 million tons of CO2 per year.
💨 Capturing CO2 with humidity
Researchers have discovered cheap and abundant materials that can trap carbon with humidity. This could be a huge step forward for scaling up this potentially game-changing technology.
🇪🇺 A fall in Europe’s emissions
Carbon emissions that fall under the EU’s carbon market – around 45% of its total emissions – dropped by 5% in 2024, thanks to the increase in renewables and drop in coal and gas.
