🌱💡 Getting communities to rally around renewables
Today's good climate and environment news
Good morning!
Here’s today’s good climate and environment news.
🤝 How renewables can win over communities
Fuelled by the far right, there’s a small but growing public opposition to renewable energy projects in Europe, especially when infrastructure like wind turbines is proposed near people’s homes. But when projects are co-owned and local stakeholders are involved in the planning and design processes, these reservations dissipate. In fact, people become champions of renewable energy because they understand the benefits it delivers to their communities, from cheaper bills to new jobs.
When communities are integral to renewable energy projects, the outcomes transcend electricity generation - they rejuvenate communities, foster economic growth, and build lasting partnerships.
🌾 The land that’s recovered from nuclear disaster
Made hazardous by radiation, farmland surrounding the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster has been left unused since the incident. But over time, the level of radiation has hugely declined, and a new study has now declared that agriculture is once again possible on much of this land. This is important news for the people who live in these areas, some of whom had already started growing their own crops.
🇮🇳 India is gearing up for a clean energy boom
India has its sights on becoming a solar superpower, hoping to both speed the transition to clean electricity within its borders and compete with China in the global market. To do so, the government is offering subsidies for homegrown solar cells and batteries, with the added benefit of spurring the creation of new manufacturing jobs.
