🌱💡 Saving species on a warming planet

Today's good climate and environment news

Here’s today’s stories of progress in the fight against climate change and nature loss.

🐘 How conservations are adapting to climate change

As the planet heats up, conservationists need to adopt fresh strategies to help animals survive. These include shifting their focus to the biggest ecosystems, like tropical rainforests, and connecting highlands and lowlands so that animals will still be protected when changes in the weather force them on the move. Others include rewilding initiatives such as bringing back bison in Romania, and working with Indigenous communities with on-the-ground knowledge.

🪵 Fortifying wood for sustainable homes

Just like Popeye eating spinach, adding iron to wood can help boost its strength. Scientists injected wood with the mineral and found that it increased its stiffness and hardness by 260.5% and 127% respectively. This discovery can help wood compete with environmentally-unfriendly cement, and crucially, doesn’t make it any heavier.

🐧 An unexpected climate hero

Penguin poo is, in its own small way, helping to fight the impacts of global heating in Antarctica. This is because it contains ammonia, which helps clouds to form – bringing temperatures down and slowing the melting of sea ice.
