šŸŒ±šŸ’” The unstoppable rise of solar power

Today's good climate and environment news

Here’s today’s good news.

ā˜€ļø A new milestone for clean power

In 2024, the world relied on clean energy sources for 40% of its electricity, helped along by the fact that solar capacity has doubled over the last three years. While it only accounts for a small fraction of our electricity supply overall, the rapid growth in solar means that clean power is poised to soon overtake the world’s electricity demand, a huge step when it comes to escaping the chokehold of fossil fuels.

It’s clear that booming solar and wind are comfortably set to deliver, and those expecting fossil fuel generation to keep rising will be disappointed.

🫧 The invention of tiny microplastic hunters

Researchers have created tiny cleaners with tentacles that could combat microplastic pollution. Made from a biodegradable polymer, the microcleaners are propelled through the water to scout for plastic particles. They carry magnesium wrapped in gelatin which dissolves as they work and reacts with the water, making bubbles that push both the cleaners and the microplastics they’ve captured to the surface for easy collection.

šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹ The young people bringing a climate case to Portugal’s doorstep

A group of Portuguese young people are filing a legal challenge against their government, hoping it will force the state to cement stronger and fairer climate policies. The group previously tried to get a case heard in the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that countries’ refusal to act on climate change threatened their lives and wellbeing. The case was thrown out, partly because the group hadn’t gone through national legal channels first – so they’re starting again at home, and ready to work their way up.
