Today's good climate and environment news
Here’s today’s good climate and environment news.
🙅🏽♀️ The ecofeminists on the frontlines
Ecofeminism is seeing a resurgence across the world, with women drawing a line between damaging extractive industries and attacks on their own rights. While global, the movement is looking to the Global South, where women on the frontline of the climate crisis have fiercely resisted such industries, whether in court or in the streets. These women see a climate movement not led by business, but by communities – one that centres care and a reciprocal relationship with the natural world.
Capitalism is only 500 years old – we created these systems, and we can create newer ones rooted in equality, justice and respect for everyone’s rights.
✈️ How taxing flights could pay for climate recovery
Adding a levy to plane tickets could raise €100bn a year to pay for climate-related damages, new research has found. This would promote climate justice, as just 1% of the global population accounts for over half of all emissions from aviation. The proposed tax would be targeted so that frequent fliers and the wealthy pay more, and range from €10 on short-haul economy flights to €120 for long-haul flights in business class.
🔋 Giving old batteries new juice
Startups across Africa are developing new uses for exhausted batteries, such as those found in electric motorcycles. From extracting their precious metals to reduce the toll of mining, to repurposing batteries so they can power refugee camps and rural health centres, these solutions are smoothing the path to renewable energy deployment across the continent. Recycling also reduces the environmental damage and risks to human health that come with leaving mountains of e-waste to seep chemicals into the soil.
